Walking in Circles or Squares

This experience is:
for 1 person
< 1 hour long aesthetic, physical

  1. Look at the weather. Dress to go outside. Put on good walking shoes and throw your keys in your pocket. Don’t bring anything else.
  2. Step outside your door and walk to the left. Take your first left. Turn left again at the next corner, and then again once more. Take a final left back onto your block, and you should arrive back at your door.
  3. Walk around the one block radius a second time and focus on the sounds in the neighborhood. Note the layers of them, the soft quiet notes, the louder bass, the beats of the repeating sounds.
  4. When you have returned back to your door after listening to the sounds, walk around the block once more this time focusing on the smells. Inhale deeply as you stroll around the block and note what your nose can tell you.
  5. On a fourth loop in your one block radius, go the opposite direction from your door (take rights instead of lefts). This time focus on touching different things you see in your neighborhood. Use your hands and skin as a form of sight.
  6. On a fourth loop in your one block radius, go the opposite direction from your door (take rights instead of lefts). This time focus on touching different things you see in your neighborhood. Use your hands and skin as a form of sight.
  7. When you return to your door again, pick a color. Any color will do. The next person or car that passes your door wearing that color, follow them. Wherever they go, trace their path. Imagine why they are headed the way they are going. Invent the story of what they are doing.
